An English-language paper based on the Japanese Clinical Practice Guidelines for Pharmacotherapy in Older Adults with Cancer, 2nd Edition, jointly developed by the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology (JSMO) and the Japan Society of Clinical Oncology (JSCO), has been published in the International Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The guidelines provide recommendations for selecting appropriate cancer pharmacotherapy for older adults, taking into consideration not only chronological age and Performance Status but also physical function, cognitive function, and psychological and social factors. The published paper focuses particularly on Geriatric Assessment (GA) and summarizes evidence and recommendations based on systematic reviews regarding multidisciplinary interventions using GA and its application to treatment decision-making.

Dr. Hirofumi Omura of our department contributed to the revision of the guidelines as a member of the systematic review team and served as the first author of the English-language paper. Through this publication, the Japanese guidelines for cancer care in older adults are being disseminated internationally and are expected to contribute to safer and more individualized cancer pharmacotherapy tailored to each patient’s condition.
